The local community site of Karekare on the west coast of Auckland

Karekare Rural Fire Party was established in 1984 as a Rural Fire Brigade, under the wings of Waitakere City Council, who provide us with our funding. We are fully integrated into the 111 Emergency call system with the Fire Service.

Once a fortnight we gather at the Fire Station for practice, usually a Monday night - you may hear the siren being tested when we start. We have around ten active members at the moment, many of whom are also members of the local First Response team and the Surf Club. Apart from our own regular training, members also attend courses in First Aid, regional Rural Fire training days, and volunteer courses at the Fire Service Training Centre in Mt Wellington. Our current Fire Chief is Kevin Ferguson.

We are always keen to hear from people interested in becoming members of our brigade, and especially those who are around Karekare during the day. Please contact Kevin Ferguson (812 8153) for more information.

history

Karekare Rural Fire Party was established in 1984, and the first local Fire Chief was Mike Foster. The first two trucks bought by the brigade were Land Rovers, one a short wheelbase 'Smoke Chaser', the other a long wheelbase transporter. These were eventually replaced by the current vehicle, a 5 ton Daihatsu truck which carries 1000 litres of water and a lot of equipment. by Matthew Grove
