Welcome to the 2009 Karekare Beach Races, a local fund-raising event and fun community day held on Karekare beach.
Programme
This is a guide to what is happening on the day, together with food stalls, pony rides, t-shirt sales, a hat competition and raffles;
- Opening 11.30 am
- Race 1 12 noon HELEN AND LAURIE BIRKS MEMORIAL RACE This is
a race for local horses and riders only. The winner receives a silver cup.
- Race 2. 1.00 p.m. POH UTUKAWA GLADE SPRINT- short sprint one length of the beach - for Thoroughbreds and faster horses.
- Race 3. 1.30 p.m. PARARAHA SPRINT short sprint for hacks.
- Race 4. 2.00 p.m. WINCHELSEA HOUSE SPRINT short sprint for ponies.
- Race 5. 2.30 p.m. LONE KAURI STAKES loop race for the faster horses.
The loop races consist of two lengths of the beach with a wide turn marked out with barrels, turning towards the sea, at the south end of the beach. So, all horses go wide outside the barrels and turn to the right.
- Race 6. 3.00 p.m. WATCHMAN STAKES loop race for hacks
- Race 7. 3.30 p.m. OPAL POOL STAKES loop race for ponies.
- Race 8. 4.00 p.m. THE CAULDRON SCRAMBLE This is a fun race for teams
of 2 people + 1 horse or pony, no galloping, more of an obstacle race.
