Project Crimson provided 150 pohutukawa grown from Karekare sourced seed for planting around the dunes. On Sunday 12th of October 2003 at 9.30am after the previous evening of torrential rain, it wasn't surprising that not many people from Auckland drove out to Karekare. The amazing thing was it turned out to be beautiful sunny day when we began planting, very warm and humid, but with lots of wading in the big pools of water left by the downpour. This planting was facilitated by Waitakere Ranges Protection Society and Karekare Landcare, with funding and trees from the Project Crimson Trust, and it was a good turn out by the local group representatives. We planted approximately 130 of the 150 plants, leaving the smaller 20 plants to go back to the nursery to be bagged up for next year. Our youngest helper Ryan was 4 months old and he promises to look after his plant! For more information on Project Crimson visit: www.projectcrimson.org.nz
