The local community site of Karekare on the west coast of Auckland

On a sunny September Sunday in 2002 a number of local families gathered at school for one of the most actively supported working bees ever seen at our Lone Kauri Community School. The school roll in September was 18 (just about the ideal size) yet there were more than 18 families represented at the working bee. Parents and friends of past families were there, pre-schoolers and their families intent on enrolling when they are five were there, and in one case three generations from the same family were represented. And what was it all for? In typical Lone Kauri fashion the project undertaken was a tree-hut in the old Rimu tree up by the south-western fence line. (There are not many urban schools that can boast this sort of facility!)

With more local architects and builders than you could shake a stick at, the project was completed with surprising efficiency and ease! More seriously, particular appreciation must go to Warren O'Hanlon and his trusty first assistant Ezra Clark, and Dean Thompson for the bulk of the skilled construction work. The rest of us can take pride in supplying good cheer and company, an excellent morning tea and lunch (with special thanks to Jenny Taylor), and we even supplied the odd bit of productive labour. October 2002 sees the addition of a fire fighters pole as the project's crowning glory. As always our teacher Bev Thompson was a constant support and inspiration, even if she did suspect that some of us were more impressed with the 'traditional country spread' than the work to be done.
