Karekare R&R Trust AGM 2018

The Karekare Residents and Ratepayers Trust held  their AGM recently on Friday 6th April at Karekare Fire Station. John Edgar was re- elected unopposed as chair and your committee is now as follows-

Jenny Taylor (Secretary)
Angela Turbott (Treasurer)
Ted Scott
Mandy Patmore
Kerrie Littlewood

Seconded onto the Committee at the KKRRPT meeting 2nd May
John Greenway

The AGM meeting was well attended, there was a good opportunity to meet and chat to locals over a glass of wine after the formal business was over. At this point Ted Scott showed a  collection of his photographs and his paintings set to music – a fascinating look at his life’s achievements. Ted says –

‘Glad everyone enjoyed the short film, A JOURNEY OF IMAGES. Have always had music in my head when creating or capturing images. So producing something that incorporated still images with a music sound track was always a far off dream. Now thanks to the available technology at our finger tips its possible to fulfil this idea. For the technical side I worked with a french  cameraman who was out here making a commercial. The really hard bit was sorting through my collection of images and matching them up, then finding appropriate  music. The opening sequence 1960s black and whites has  60s rock. The  colour contemporary images classical  music.  The second part of the film features my paintings in chronological order from the age of nine to the present has a  modern jazz backing. There you have it, my creative life in ten minutes. ‘ Ted  Scott

Karekare Beach Races Saturday 8th April 2017

Karekare Beach Races – Saturday 8th April 2017 – from 11am

It is time for the beach races, Karekare’s special carnival day – lots of fun for all the family and a great social event. We will have thundering hooves in the main races, and the Kidz Kartz again – that is little kids driving tiny ponies flat out! And all the usual attractions – home made food, a flutter on the horses, pony rides, kids’ fun races, quick-fire raffles and the famous Karekare T-shirts. See the new design on our Karekare Beach Races facebook page. Prices will be $25 for kids, $35 for adults – available on race day only.

This is our big fund raising day for local Karekare causes –the school and the surf club. Come along and enjoy the fun, make sure you have Sat 8th April marked in your diary. Let your horsey friends know – see the entry form. The committee are hard at work making arrangements for this fun, fundraising day for the school and surf club. We all know parking will be at a premium. So, if possible, locals, please arrange to park at a friend’s, not in a public spot. There will be reserved parking for school parents and VIP’s. To make the day run smoothly we need all the local help we can get. We need volunteers to help with pony rides, to help set up in the morning, to pack down at the end, to sell programmes, to help with parking, to offer help to anyone on the day who looks hassled and has not had a break! The more helpers, the more everyone gets a chance for  a break. Any offers to Bob 8128 091, Caroline 8128 760 or Sarah 0272 619 409

The day will start earlier for some – with a running race from Piha. If you are up for some exercise before devouring the famous surf-club sandburgers and Lone Kauri School cakes, how about a run or walk over from Piha to Karekare? The “Human Event” starts from Steadfast Park at 9am and follows the Hillary Trail to finish at the event village on Karekare Beach. We will take your gear over to Karekare and you can have a shower at the surf club so you can enjoy the races before heading back to Piha on the shuttle later. For more info and to enter, see –

Again, this year, there will be The Fantastic Hat competition, so get creative – this year the theme is ‘Feathered Friends’ . There is a $2 entry fee, enter on the day and be there for judging to start at 11 am, there are three categories, prizes for each group:

1. Pre-school 2. 5 – 12 years old 3. Open

Parking is always limited at Karekare but that problem is solved for Piha people who can just get the shuttle. Chris McLean of the Piha Surf Shuttle will be running a shuttle service leaving from the Domain from 9 a.m. – and carrying on till he has got everyone back! The charge will be $3 a head or $5 return or $20 for a family of 5 or more. You can contact him on 027 444 1288

To enter the horse races or any queries – phone Caroline Grove 8128 760 or Kim Conway 027 6688 062 or email Entry forms can be downloaded from here

Honouring eight decades of service

The Karekare Surf Lifesaving Club are celebrating the start of the club‘s 80th year of Lifesaving, starting with the AGM. The AGM is the perfect opportunity for you to ask the patrons and management how the service is going and what the plans are for this special year ahead. As we head into the new patrolling season, there is a definite feeling of optimism for the current year, as well as a good look back to acknowledge the outstanding contribution our members make. We are thrilled that the local Logger Boys will again entertain us following the formalities. All are welcome including children and young nippers.
Look forward to seeing you there.
